Darius Rucker was a trending topic on Twitter early Thursday morning (2/25) and it’s all thanks to a Post Malone cover of “Only Wanna Be With You.” The rapper released his cover of the 1995 Hootie & The Blowfish hit ahead of his Pokémon Day 25th anniversary virtual concert, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 27th.

In his cover however, Malone sings “the Cowboys make me cry,” changing the original lyric from “the Dolphins make me cry.” The alteration caught the attention of listeners, who looked into the lyric, only to realize that Rucker was singing about the NFL team, the Miami Dolphins.

“Wait. When Darius Rucker sang “And the Dolphins made me cry” he wasn’t talking about the ocean animals? He was talking about the Miami Dolphins? What???” wrote one user on Twitter.

Added another, “I was today years old when I realized the lyric “I’m such a baby, yeah the Dolphins make me cry” is about the Miami dolphins. I always thought Darius Rucker cried at the beach.”

Rucker has been a well-known fan of the Miami-based team for years, even naming his daughter Dani after the team’s famous quarterback, Dan Marino. In an interview with the NFL, Rucker revealed the story behind his love for the team.

“When I was five-years-old, the Dolphins played the Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl and they lost and my whole family was pulling for the Cowboys. I said I loved the Dolphins and I started pulling for them and I became a big fan. The next year they went undefeated. It was awesome. It was great and all through the years, they’ve had such great players and I’ve gotten to be friends with my favorite player. My favorite athlete of all time is Dan Marino and it all came from my love of the Dolphins,” he shared in the 2015 interview, adding that he has a tattoo of their logo.

He got to meet Marino when he and his bandmates of Hootie & The Blowfish were coming up with the concept of their “Only Wanna Be With You” music video.

“We were putting out our third single, and we had a meeting with Atlantic Records. They said “You guys need to do a video for ‘Only Wanna Be With You.'” I remember saying in the meeting ‘Well, I want to meet Dan Marino. We ought to do some sort of video where we could put Dan Marino in it.” Then everybody in the band started talking about people we wanted to meet, Fred Couples, some guys from ESPN, some other folks, some basketball players. All of a sudden we have the ‘Only Wanna Be With You’ video drawn up,” he recalled to ESPN.

You can see Post Malone’s updated version of the Hootie & The Blowfish hit when he performs for the Pokémon anniversary concert, streaming at 7:00 p.m. EST / 4:00 p.m. PST on February 27th.
