Darius Rucker Shares His ‘Southern Style’

Darius Rucker

It’s been a big week for Darius Rucker, who is currently sitting atop the country chart with his tune, “Homegrown Honey.” It’s the lead single from the South Carolina native’s fourth album, Southern Style, which was released yesterday (March 31). Darius invited CountryMusicIsLove to his hometown of Charleston last week to chat about the tune — which he wrote with Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley and producer Nathan Chapman — as well as the new record.

“[Charles and Nathan] had this great idea and I was like, ‘Yeah, let’s write that,'” Darius told CMIL. “We just started writing and it came. It was just one of those songs that just came. We knew we were writing something cool and the ideas just kept popping out and the melodies just kept popping out. When we were done with it, I said, ‘That’s my first single.’ I was right.”

The project includes a wide range of topics and stories all with one common thread; they describe Darius’ life, interests and dreams. The final tune on the album, “So I Sang,” is quite possibly the most emotional as it describes a young man facing the obstacles of life with his voice.

“It’s so me. I sung it with the guys once and twice and I was like, ‘It’s so me,'” he admits. “It’s three different times in my life; it’s growing up, it’s being in middle school and high school and falling in love; then it’s when my mom passed away. Three very important parts of my life. That’s one of those songs that I don’t know if I can sing it every night. If I sing it in the wrong situation, I’ll be bawling like a little baby. I love that tune.”
