Blake Shelton’s team on the upcoming season of NBC’s The Voice will get tremendous help from an artist whose career has spanned decades. Teaming up with Shelton to assist in coaching some of music’s brightest new undiscovered talent will be Darius Rucker.

ET’s Nancy O’Dell sat down with the two over the summer before the news was announced to talk about their upcoming partnership during the battle rounds.

“Darius Rucker is the perfect choice for, I would say, anything in my life,” Shelton shared with ET before joking, “I mean, I have been drinking.”

“He’s the perfect choice as a mentor on The Voice for obvious reasons,” he continued. “I made a joke earlier to one of the artists on the show, I go, ‘You know Darius literally has proven that if he decides whatever it is he wants to do in life, he conquers it.’”

For Rucker, being a part of the show is a big deal, as he’s both a big fan of both The Voice and Shelton.

“First of all, he’s so funny and the thing that really makes him a great coach is he’s so genuine. Blake is never BS, ever,” said Rucker. “He’s honest and like I’ve told him, me and my family watch the show religiously. We watch it all the time and, you know, Blake is always honest with them and he’s always got something cool to say.”

In addition to Rucker’s advice, contestants this season will work with Normani on Team Kelly Clarkson, will.i.am on Team Gwen Stefani and Usher for Team John Legend.

The Voice returns Monday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
