Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper decided to channel the original roles played by Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in the remake of the 1976 film, A Star is Born.

The first trailer from the movie premiered, and details the drama set to unfold on screen between the two music-inspired characters. Cooper takes on the part of country music has-been, Jackson Maine, while Lady Gaga makes her big screen debut as an aspiring artist herself. Her career takes off almost overnight after meeting with Maine and the rest goes on from there.

In the almost two-and-a-half-minute clip, Gaga and Bradley’s worlds collide when they lock eyes during one of her shows in a crowded club. The character of Maine tries to convince her of making a name for herself, while she hesitates with the possibility of fame and notoriety.

“I don’t sing my own songs. I just don’t feel comfortable,” Gaga says in character. “Almost every single person has told me they like the way I sounded but they didn’t like the way I look.”

They end up going on a musical journey with one another, supporting each other through the intense highs and dropping lows that come with a life in the spotlight. While Cooper alludes to struggling with alcohol addiction and Gaga can’t quite find the balance between the attention and privacy, they unravel their story together with the issues unknown left to discover when the film arrives.

Cooper starred in the movie, as well as lead the directorial portion of the production. This marks the first time that the actor stepped outside to the director role, and singing live for an acting part on camera.

The movie, A Star is Born, comes to theaters on October 5.
