After two-and-a-half years of dating, singer Devin Dawson and his girlfriend Leah Sykes are married. The two said “I do” in front of 200 guests at the Carnton historic plantation house and museum in Franklin, TN on Sunday, October 27.

“The property has a perfect set up for a fall wedding with the garden, foliage and a 250-year-old oak tree serving as an incredibly gorgeous and natural altar,” Dawson explained to PEOPLE of their choice to marry at the farm.

The couple was surrounded by their closest friends and family, with Dawson’s brother Jacob performing the ceremony. Dawson’s groomsmen included his best man and twin brother Jacob Durrett, childhood best friends Kyle Fishman and Daniel Kutch, best friends from college Grant Blevins and Matt Roberts, his band’s right-hand man and collaborator Austin Taylor Smith and music industry confidant Josh Tomlinson.

Keeping in touch with their songwriting roots, the couple decided to forego traditional vows in favor of writing their own.

We wanted to recite our own written vows in addition to traditional wedding vows,” Dawson shared. “You better believe that two songwriters and artists wanted to write our own vows and promises!”

The couple met when both were attending Belmont University in Nashville. Dawson admits that he knew early on in their relationship that he’d marry Sykes one day.

“After our first date I told my brother I didn’t want to let anyone else be with her,” he recalled. “He told me to lock it down then! This is big because we never really talked love or relationships together at all.”

It was during their two year anniversary trip to San Francisco that Dawson popped the question.

The newlyweds will celebrate their marriage with a “mini moon” to Blackberry Farm in Nashville before taking a full honeymoon abroad at the beginning of the year.
