Drake Milligan did country music proud when he busted out his own version of a George Strait song during his audition on American Idol.

The Fort Worth, Texas, native explained to the judges that his love of Elvis got him on a singing kick before flipping it all around to perform a country number instead. Looking toward Strait’s “You Look Good in Love,” the panel seemed hesitant to hear what The King of Rock and Roll’s influence would have toward The King of Country, but they all looked pleasantly surprised by Milligan’s vocal repertoire.

Hitting lower notes and not losing the emotion behind the lyric, the singer made an impression on the table by using the ‘scooping’ technique on his performance to lasso in the right tone. Although Katy Perry commented on rounding that riff up a bit, Luke Bryan seemed to enjoy the stylistic approach to the classic tune and compared him to the talent he hears in Nashville when he’s back in town.

Joking that Milligan better call up all of his friends that refer to him by the nickname, “Hollywood,” because of his Golden Ticket earning, the contestant gladly accepted the opportunity to move on to the next round and thanked the judges with a simple handshake.

Fans may recognize the talented singer from his stint on CMT’s Sun Records, where he portrayed Elvis. Unfortunately, the show’s run on television was short lived and never saw a season two.

American Idol airs new episodes on Sunday and Monday nights at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
