Eric Church paid tribute to John Prine on Wednesday afternoon (4/8) with a cover of the late singer’s “Long Monday.” In a black & white clip posted to his social media, Church shared his love for Prine while strumming his guitar and singing along.

“We lost one of my all time favorites yesterday,” said an emotional Church, “a man that taught me how to write songs, so I want to do this for John.”

With nothing more to be said, the North Carolina native began singing. “Gonna be a long Monday / Sittin’ all alone on a mountain / By a river that has no end / Gonna be a long Monday / Stuck like the tick of a clock / That’s come unwound – again,” he crooned.

He closed the clip by simply saying, “I love you, John Prine. Thank you.”

Like Church, many other artist influenced by the great performer have posted their own tributes. Miranda Lambert shared that Prine had influenced her songwriting, as well as her home decor as she showed carved lyrics in his handwriting on her outdoor fire pit.

Kacey Musgraves also honored Prine with a series of photos posted to her Instagram story, sharing moments from when they shared the stage together, as well as the tearful moment she heard of his passing.

Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 at the age of 73 following complications from the coronavirus.
