Warner Music Nashville recording artist Ian Munsick has earned support from the country music industry and fans alike for his eclectic sound and breakout album Country Cry. He’s spent years working on his craft, spending hours and days at a time dedicated to creating music. But when the singer and his wife welcomed a baby boy, priorities shifted and he found a deeper meaning in his life’s work. In this letter for Father’s Day, Munsick offers some inspiration and encouraging words for dads-to-be and new dads.

Being a father is the best thing that has ever happened – and I think will ever happen – to me. Before my son Crawford was born, the hours in a day strictly revolved around making music. If I wasn’t actively writing, recording, rehearsing… I felt like I was wasting my time – and believe me, I hate wasting time. When my wife and manager Caroline and I found out we were going to have a baby, my number one concern was sacrificing time to work on music. I was concerned not only because I love what I do, but because it’s how I provide for my family. The pressure was on, and there was only one way to find out if I was ready.

The day Crawford was born, my world changed forever. All of the sudden, spending time with him and Caroline was more important than anything else, including music. I had a feeling all along that that would be the case, I just didn’t know how it would affect my career and craft. As it turns out, spending less time working on music somehow made me fall in love with the process even more. More importantly, however, I’ve fallen more in love with life.

I am now convinced that loving something more than your craft is the key to loving your craft even more. Now I “get to” spend time working instead of “have to.” My son has inspired a whole new perspective and gratitude for how I spend my time, which I think leads to a healthier, more fulfilling life.

So, if you are a new dad, an old dad, a soon-to-be dad, or want to be a dad someday… you are lucky. You have or soon will unlock the key to this unlimited source of happiness. Once that happens, you just gotta keep mom happy too!
