Controversial former American Idol contestant Caleb Kennedy has been charged with felony DUI, following a deadly crash in his native South Carolina.

According to People, the 17 year old was “arrested after allegedly crashing his truck into a building and killing a man” on Tuesday (February 8).

Citing a Trooper from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, People reports that Kennedy was driving drunk when his truck left the road at in Spartanburg, SC, at 12:42 p.m. Kennedy crashed into a house, and a man inside was killed. The Country singer has now been formally charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death, and was taken into custody.

“A 2011 Ford pickup was traveling north on W. Murph Road when the vehicle traveled onto a private drive at 269 W. Murph Road and struck a building,” Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway confirmed. “A person inside the building sustained fatal injury as a result of the collision.”

According to the Spartanburg County Coroners Office, via local station WYFF4, the man inside the building was 54-year-old Larry Duane Parris. He was pronounced dead at the hospital a few hours after the crash.

This is not the first brush with trouble for the country singer, who exited American Idol in 2021 after years-old social media content surfaced, showing Kennedy interacting with someone wearing what looked to be a Ku Klux Klan costume. Kennedy was in the season’s Top 5 at the time, and apologized on social media.
