Gabby Barrett has been pursuing her dreams of becoming a recording artist for many years with the help of her dedicated dad. The budding singer surprised her pops with the news that she’d earned a spot on a larger platform when she auditioned for American Idol. Now, in the Top 10, Barrett is amazed at all that has happened in her life since that fateful day in front of judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

“This has been such a roller coaster ride so far and I’m just excited to see what comes next,” Barrett explained during a phone interview with Sounds Like Nashville. “To make it to the top 10 for America’s vote and be nine other people away from becoming the next American Idol is absolutely crazy to me. I mean, I would not be here if it weren’t for the people that support me. And I can’t thank you guys enough for all the love and support. Absolutely, this is a surreal experience and something I will never forget.”

Since joining the ABC reboot, Barrett has gone on to work with many industry professionals, from Sugarland to Idina Menzel, among others, each of whom has offered the young artist to keep at her craft.

“It was absolutely a huge honor to be mentored and guided through this process by such big names and icons as well. The judges themselves have been absolutely amazing towards us. We do get to talk to them and they give us advice and they say, ‘Keep your head on straight.’ And they talk to us a lot which is really nice,” she shared.

Being one of the next generation of Idol singers is more than a dream come true for Barrett–it’s a lifelong yearning. The country hopeful remembers watching season four winner Carrie Underwood take home the crown and knowing that this, too, was her dream.

“The first season of American Idol I actually watched was with Carrie Underwood on it. And the year that she won, I watched it. And I remember my parents voting for her,” she recalled. “I always liked Carrie Underwood how she could sing country music and bring other people in country but she could also go on stage and sing a song with Steven Tyler, a rock song. I loved her diversity because I always loved all genres of music when I was younger.”

Fans can catch Barrett as she works at becoming the next American Idol when the series airs on Sundays at 8/7c on ABC.
