While he has three kids of his own, Tim McGraw is taking on the role of godfather for one of his former film co-stars.
Garrett Hedlund recently explained why he and his partner, Emma Roberts, granted McGraw the kind honor for their newborn son while on The Kelly Clarkson Show. The actor lent the reasoning to their tight bond throughout the years, which started back in 2004 on the set of the movie, Friday Night Lights.
“We laugh about it because it’s probably been over 17 years since we did Friday Night Lights together, we played father and son. So I got to first experience him as a father — in that film, somewhat more of an abusive one — but then we did Country Strong together, and we’ve remained such close friends and, you know, I’ve seen his children, his daughters, from the time they were 1, 3 and 5,” Hedlund explained.
The way the question went down, though, was actually more of a request rather than an ask from McGraw.
“After around 12 weeks of Emma being pregnant, I called him, and the first thing he said was, ‘I’m the godfather.’ So, how can you argue,” Hedlund recalled.
Hedlund and Roberts announced they were expecting back in August of 2020 before they welcomed their little guy, Rhodes Robert, right before New Year’s Eve.
McGraw shares his three daughters–Gracie, 23, Maggie, 22, and Audrey, 19–with wife and fellow country star Faith Hill.
The “Shotgun Rider” singer most recently headlined the Amazon Music Country Heat Showcase at CRS 2021, which was held as a virtual concert event. Fans can also check out, “Undivided,” his collaboration with Tyler Hubbard now.
