A TV drama inspired by the award winning Blake Shelton hit, “God’s Country,” is officially in the works.

According to a new report in the Hollywood-insider outlet Deadline, a drama based on the dark, intense country smash is being developed by Shelton’s TV bosses at NBC (who also broadcast his long running music competition show, The Voice). Shelton is teamed up with Las Vegas creator and The Fast and the Furious co-writer Gary Scott Thompson to create the project, and it sounds like the plot will be just as shadowy as the song it comes from.

With Thompson writing the story, TV’s God’s Country will follow a hardworking Midwestern farm family who’s head-of-household dies suddenly and mysteriously in a car accident, leaving his grown children to discover a secret he was hiding which “they could never have imagined.” There’s no word on when the project will be ready for viewing.

The news is just the latest in a long string of success “God’s Country” has enjoyed, ever since it was written by Devin Dawson, Hardy and Jordan Schmidt. Since being released by Shelton in March of 2019, it has since gone triple-Platinum and anchored its own greatest-hits album (Fully Loaded: God’s Country), while cleaning up at awards shows. Last week the track won Single of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards, and had previously took home the 2019 CMA Awards trophy for the same category — but there may be more wins in its future.

With more shows to come, Blake Shelton and “God’s Country” were just nominated in two fields at this year’s Billboard Music Awards — the all-genre Top Selling Song and Top Country Song.
