Country singer Granger Smith and his wife Amber are expecting a child this summer — their fourth, a baby boy due in August. And this week (May 11), they’ve shared what they plan to name him.

The parents will give the family’s newest addition the name Maverick Beckham Smith in honor of their late son, River, who died at the age of three just two years ago.

Speaking in an emotional YouTube clip, the Smiths explained that they wanted to tribute the memory of young River, who perished in a heartbreaking drowning accident at the family home in 2019. That’s why the letters “R – I – V” appear in baby number four’s name, but they also wanted him to have his own identity — to not feel to tied to his brother’s tragedy. Maverick seemed like a good choice, and Granger says Beckham means “home by the river.”

The Smith’s revealed the news of their pregnancy back in March, and have since detailed a process that was just as harrowing as it was rewarding.

Amber had her tubes tied after River’s birth, she explained. But in the wake of his passing both parents felt they still had “extra love to give.” They began trying to conceive again in January of 2020 through in vitro fertilization (IVF), but suffered a miscarriage before Maverick came along — representing the couple’s very last embryo.

“I’m so happy, so happy, that we’re pregnant… And I’m so sad,” Granger Smith told CBS This Morning. “That one child replaced another in that way. And so we say that this, that we’re moving forward, we never move on from something like this. But we’re moving forward into a new chapter.”
