When Ryan Hurd originally planned to go to college, he had his sights set on going to the University of Michigan, a school just two hours away from his home in Kalamazoo. However, there was something pulling him away and he eventually landed at Belmont University in Nashville, TN.

“I got a sociology degree right here from Belmont. Man, I loved it. I just found a professor that I really vibed with and I love books, I love big ideas, and I love talking, and that’s kind of how I got into that,” Hurd told Sounds Like Nashville during a drive through his old stomping grounds. “It was just interesting stuff and I feel like if you go to school, you should go learn something.”

During our drive with Hurd, the “Love in a Bar” singer talked about his college days and living just down the street from fellow country musicians Brothers Osborne and Charlie Worsham.

“We didn’t exactly run in the same circles but I knew of those guys and I knew they were in KingBilly,” he explained. “It’s so funny to kind of come full circle and write with those dudes and be on their records and be friends with them.”
