“Down to the Honky Tonk” singer Jake Owen will make his acting debut in an upcoming film titled The Friend.

Currently filming in Alabama, the feature-length movie will find Owen in good company for his first role. It stars Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother), Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) and Casey Affleck (Manchester By the Sea).

Details are scarce, but The Friend will be based on an award-winning 2015 essay published in Esquire, “The Friend: Love Is Not a Big Enough Word.” Written by Matthew Teague, it’s a true-story account of Teague’s terminally ill wife and the support of his best friend, who moves into their home following her diagnosis.

Other notable actors include Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie, Hamilton: An American Musical’s Denee Benton and Cherry Jones of the film Boy Erased.

No word yet on when The Friend will be released, but Owen’s new album Greetings From … Jake arrives March 29. His current single, “Down To The Honkytonk,” is inside country radio’s Top 10.
