On Sunday, July 11, Jake Owen shared the sad news that his German Shepherd named Slash has passed away. The singer posted a collection of photos on Instagram featuring both of his German Shepherds and explained the medical event that led to the death of Slash. The heartbreaking post also revealed that Owen wasn’t able to see his dog before he passed.

“I lost one of my best friends last night unexpectedly.. the drs said his stomach had ‘flipped’ and even with emergency surgery, it wasn’t enough to save him…I didn’t even make it home in time to say goodbye,” Owen wrote. “Slash was my youngest German Shepherd and the sweetest most loving dog I’ve ever had. He was more like a human than a dog. While my other pups would run free across the farm, Slash just wanted to be by my side.”

The “Made For You” singer continued, sharing the grief he is feeling at the loss of his pup.

“Losing a dog is like losing a family member,” he wrote. “It was hard for me to even put this post together and share. Go love on your family. Go love on your dogs. See ya up there in Slashy. Love ya buddy.”

Owen was in West Salem, WI over the weekend performing at the Country Boom Festival. He is set to perform at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN on July 15 for a show dubbed Jake Owen & Friends: A Concert Made For You. Owen will be joined at the show by some of the songwriters who wrote his hit singles and proceeds from the event will benefit the CMA Foundation.
