James Van Der Beek Says Country Stars Are ‘The Most Fun’

James Van Der Beek - Miranda Lambert

The CMT Music Awards are quite the party in Nashville. But it’s what happens after the awards are over that sound even better!

Actor James Van Der Beek presented Miranda Lambert with Female Video of the Year during the telecast, but felt like a singer at a get-together in a Nashville bar following the broadcast.

“I was handing off a drink, a song came on that I’d never heard before and a microphone was handed to me,” Van Der Beek told PEOPLE. “Then Blake Shelton was coaching me through it note by note and I was on a table!”

Van Der Beek’s wife Kimberly added, “[James] came back and was like, ‘Oh, by the way, I was just drunken karaoke-ing on a table and Blake Shelton was my coach!’ I said, ‘What? What?'”

And though the Dawson’s Creek actor-turned-karaoke star enjoyed his moment in the spotlight, he added that Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley was the star of the night. “He was amazing!” he said of Kelley’s rendition of Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It.” The funniest part for the actor? “When country stars karaoke, they don’t sing country.”

Following his experience, it seems Van Der Beek is now country music fan for life. “I’m always going to party with country stars from here on out. They’re the most fun!”
