It’s been a trying few days for the Spears family as singer Jamie Lynn’s daughter was in a traumatic accident involving an ATV on Sunday afternoon. 8-year-old Maddie was driving on her family’s property when she went to swerve and avoid a drainage ditch. In doing so, she over-corrected and flipped into a pond, submerging her for minutes while Jamie Lynn and her step-father Jamie Watson frantically tried to free her from her seat belt.

Not much was known about the status of Maddie’s health until Tuesday (Feb. 7) when the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Department revealed that she was conscious and talking.

“With her father, mother and stepfather by her side, Maddie regained consciousness mid-day Tuesday, February 7,” they wrote in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “Doctors were able to remove the ventilator today and she is awake and talking. Maddie continues to receive oxygen and is being monitored closely but it appears that she has not suffered any neurological consequences from the accident.”

The family has been relatively quiet throughout the trials of this accident until Tuesday night when Jamie Watson posted to Instagram to thank fans for their thoughts and prayers.

“Thank you to everyone for the prayers. Maddie is doing better and better. Thank y’all so much,” he posted with an article of clothing that read “Believe in Miracles.”

No word on how long Maddie will remain in the hospital.
