Jason Aldean appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show to chat about new music and his continued success, but he ended up getting personal with his longtime pal.

After first discussing his ACM Artist of the Decade honor and filling his host in on the worst gift he’s ever received (a motion sensor light that hangs over your toilet), Clarkson asked Aldean how hard it was to move on from the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting, and into his first Las Vegas residency.

“The best thing for me was that my wife was there and went through it, my band was there and went through it, my crew, everybody, so we kind of leaned on each other for that stuff and talked through it,” Aldean explained. “Nobody kept it bottled up, if you had a breakdown you kinda had it in front of everybody … but we’re on the other side of it now, and we’re part of the Route 91 family.”

Aldean and Clarkson went on to chat about his four kids — how the youngest are starting to realize what he does for a living, and his oldest daughter wants to study music in college. “It’s exciting that she has the bug and loves music, but it’s a tough business and you gotta have pretty thick skin,” Aldean admitted. Later on, he also shared the story of how he got his stage name — his real name is actually Jason Williams — and picked up a too-cute accessory for his cowboy hat, courtesy of YouTube star JoJo Siwa.
