Fans at John Mayer’s concert in Nashville, TN on Thursday night (8/8) were already in for an incredible night of music from the superstar artist. Little did they know that things would be kicked up a notch when country crooner Chris Stapleton stepped out on stage at Bridgestone Arena to create a moment unlike any other.

Just one day earlier, the two songwriters came together for a writing session, penning a new smash dubbed “I Just Remembered That I Didn’t Care.” Nearly 24 hours later, the two were ready to perform the track for fans.

“I texted this friend and I said, ‘You wanna do one of your songs or one of my songs?’ And he said, ‘We could do either or we could just write a song and play it.’ I said, ‘Challenge accepted,'” Mayer prefaced the surprise collaboration before Stapleton walked out on stage.

“I’ve done a lot of cool stuff before, but nothing quite like writing a song with the great @chrisstapleton on a Wednesday and playing it live on an arena stage on a Thursday… It’s called ‘I Just Remembered That I Didn’t Care,’ and it’s available now somewhere on YouTube. (And if that wasn’t enough, he sat in on ‘Slow Dancing in a Burning Room.’) Thanks Chris for the idea to write a song to perform together, and for being such a creative powerhouse. The afterglow is bright,” Mayer wrote later on Instagram.

Positive comments rolled in to the post with artists like Lindsay Ell writing “Song is so good. It crushed.” Fans also called for the release of the track to hit as soon as possible.

Mayer is currently out on the road for his 2019 World Tour. The trek will span North America through September.
