John Prine won two posthumous awards at the 2021 GRAMMYs when he claimed the awards for Best American Roots Performance and Best American Roots Song with “I Remember Everything,” his final song.

Prine died in April 2020 from coronavirus complications and his wife Fiona was there to accept the awards on his behalf. “The music community in Nashville and beyond, you’re encouragement has meant the world to us this past year,” she said upon accepting his awards (quote via Saving Country Music). “And to the fans, you span several generations now. Thank you for supporting and continuing to promote John’s words and music in the world.”

In a virtual press conference following the awards, Fiona thanked fans for their ongoing love and support for the late musicmaker.

“I think that just confirms what we, of course, knew to be true about John: that he was absolutely lovable,” Fiona shares (quotes via Taste of Country). “Even at his most irritating, John was lovable. And then, of course, he had this remarkable, unique talent.

“I always tell people: If you want to know the story of John Prine, start reading the lyrics of the first song and go all the way to ‘I Remember Everything,'” she continues. “We’re so grateful to the fans, really.”

Fiona Prine was joined on the livestream by the couple’s sons Jack and Tommy, and Fiona’s son Jody, who Prine adopted years earlier.

Prine will continued to be honored through the GRAMMYs celebration as fellow winner Brandi Carlile will pay homage to him during her performance. The 63rd GRAMMY Awards, hosted by The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah, air live on Sunday, March 14 at 8/7c on CBS.
