Breakout hit maker Jordan Davis toasted his second career No.1 song yesterday at the Nashville event space, Ruby. And even though a chart topper is hard to come by, no matter the circumstances, Davis said the Gold-certified “Take It From Me” is a special one.

Along with friend and co-writer Jason Gantt, Davis penned the rapid-fire romantic groover with his brother, Jacob, so the Louisiana natives brought their whole family out to celebrate.

“I guess the only relief is, now you can’t be a one hit wonder, but you can still be a two hit wonder,” Jordan joked during a press conference before the party in his honor, filled with well wishers from around the music industry. The artist explained it was written more than four years ago when Jacob came up with an idea for the title, with Jordan immediately connecting it to the way the boys’ “paw paw” would give them advice. But Jacob decided to use the “take it from me” hook in a literal sense, and that made all the difference.

“We didn’t reinvent the wheel on this one, but for me this is 100 percent who I am as an artist,” Jordan said. “That’s why this was the first song on my album — if you didn’t like ‘Take It From Me,’ you probably wouldn’t be a fan of my stuff. … Then I think fans gravitated to it because it’s a fun song that everybody knows about. Like, when you get in that relationship with somebody that literally could do anything they want, and you’re totally cool with it, I’ve had more than a few guys come up to me and they have lost T-shirts in that situation.”

The song marks Jacob’s first career No.1, so needless to say the brothers were watching its chart progress closely. Calling the final push a “gloves off brawl,” Jordan said he finally learned “Take It From Me” was on top in the middle of the night, and called his brother right away.

“My phone rings at 2:30 a.m. and he goes ‘What are you doing?’” Jacob recalled with a grin. “I’m like ‘Sleeping bro.’ And he’s like ‘Sleeping on that No.1 song,’ and I was like ‘Oh, he’s definitely been drinking.’”

The next morning Jordan flew out to Charleston, South Carolina, to meet up with Jacob and his wife, and at least one of them kept the party going over brunch.

“He showed up at this breakfast place and was like ‘Lemme get three mimosas. Do y’all want anything?’” Jacob said to another round of laughs.

After accepting their commemorative plaques and thanking everyone who worked so hard to make their success happen, the brothers turned their attention back toward family. And it was Jacob who put the whole thing in perspective.

“I remember growing up, mom and dad always said, ‘Watch out for baby Jordan, you always have baby Jordan’s back,’ and I took pride in that,” Jacob said. With his parents, grandparents and more looking on, the first time chart topper said he now has two kids of his own and tells them the same thing. He feels like his life has come full circle. “It’s a sweet, sweet thing,” Jacob went on, turning to face his brother. “I can honestly say I’ve never taken more pride or been more honored to watch baby Jordan do his thing, because this is the best, dude.”

Jordan Davis’ current single “Slow Dance in a Parking Lot” is out now, and he’ll be on the road as part of Rascal Flatts’ Summer Playlist Tour through September.
