Most people do their best to stay far, far away from great white sharks — but not rising star Jordan Davis. The “Slow Dance In a Parking Lot” singer shared a few pics of a recent encounter with one, and explained what it was all about for reporters in the middle of Shark Week.

Speaking ahead of the No.1 party for his latest chart-topper, “Take It From Me,” Davis explained his soft spot for ocean life — even super-predators like great white sharks. He actually graduated from college with a degree in Environmental Science, and said lately he’s been working with an organization called Ocearch.

“I’ve done two expeditions with them … and that shark’s name is ‘Signles You Up,'” he said of the incredible photo series. “She got tagged last year off of Nantucket, and she’s a three-and-a-half foot white shark. I think she’s a year old and she’s been all up and down the coast. Basically, Ocearch is a non-profit organization to strengthen the white shark population, as well as to clean up the oceans.

“Me and [brother, songwriter] Jacob have an environmental background, so we love the outdoors and to fish and what they’re they’re doing to project the white shark,” he went on. “They’re one of the top predators in the ocean, and they’re getting killed off more and more every year. Ocearch is trying to strengthen them because if we lose the white shark — which is the primary predator in the ocean — we’ll probably lose the oceans.”

Davis is looking forward to doing even more to help Ocearch in the future. But even knowing how important they are to the ecosystem, he admits he’s not immune to a little shark fright.

“I’ll be honest with you, on that dock — even with a puppy shark — a three foot shark is extremely powerful,” he said. “I had to go hold down the fin in the back, and the shark just twitched a little bit, and I looked at my buddy like ‘Dude, this thing is strong.’ And he’s like ‘Oh yeah, if this fish wants to move, you’re not gonna hold it down. This is just for pictures.’ So, it was pretty scary to be that close to Jaws.”

Davis’ “Slow Dance In a Parking Lot” is out now. He and wife Kristen are currently expecting the birth of their first child, and he’ll be on the road with Rascal Flatts’ Summer Playlist Tour into the fall.
