Oscar-nominated actor Josh Brolin, whose film credits include No Country For Old Men, Everest, and Milk, has signed on to play the legendary George Jones in an upcoming biopic.

The film, which has a working title of No Show Jones, will tell the story of Jones’ career and his longtime battle with alcohol abuse and cocaine addiction. Brolin, who was previously arrested for public intoxication, discussed his role in the film during an interview with Conan O’Brien and joked that his past may have helped him land the part.

“I have a bit of a past,” he said. “When they were trying to figure out who might be best able to best play George Jones, they thought, ‘What about Brolin? Who’s been to jail in the last 10 years? Let’s pick Brolin!'”

Jones gave his blessing to the biopic before he passed away in 2013. His widow, Nancy, is serving as executive producer on the film and promises that the film will stay true to Jones’ story.

“I don’t want any lies — I want it exactly the way George started the [script] when he started it six years ago,” she previously told Rolling Stone Country.

Alan Wenkus, who recently received an Oscar nomination for his work on Straight Outta Compton, is writing the screenplay. Jessica Chastain will reportedly play the role of Tammy Wynette, Jones’ ex-wife and former duet partner.

While no release date has officially been announced, Brolin said fans can expect to see it in 2017.
