Though the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to the live debut of their new duet “Last Time I Say Sorry” on the ACM Awards stage, Kane Brown and John Legend still found a way to make it happen on ACM Presents: Our Country.

With a televised Legend projected on the laptop next to Brown, their voices sounded stunning together as Brown FaceTimed Legend from his living room in Nashville, Legend admitting that he’s “trying to find ways to stay creative” while noting “it’s definitely a weird time.” “It’s weird that we’re doing it this way, but I feel like we got this,” Brown said confidently before the two launched into a gorgeous duet of the new song.

Poised at his piano with his many Grammy Awards sitting on a shelf behind him, Legend’s voice still has the power to break your heart even when he’s singing through the phone. Brown’s delivery was also powerful, the song flexing the cinematic muscle in his voice. “I’m so grateful to have a song with you and I hope everybody else loves it as much as I do,” Brown said, concluding the performance.

“Last Time I Say Sorry” was released on Friday (April 3). The 55th ACM Awards are rescheduled for Wednesday, September 16.
