Most people run out of the door screaming and hollering when they earn the ‘Golden Ticket’ to Hollywood on American Idol. Gabby Barrett opted for a different, more surprising approach to telling her dad she was on to the next round thanks to the scheming of Katy Perry.

Barrett walked in to audition with a smile on her face, claiming her love for all things Carrie Underwood. Belting out all she had in her to match the standards of Underwood’s vocal range, the judges steered her away from the ‘jukebox’ cover-up and advised her to try something more toward a unique and identifying style.

The contestant brought her church choir sound to the auditioning room, in which the table stopped her after hardly one verse to let her know she gained potential just from that one notable switch of the genre. Giving her the green light to continue on toward Hollywood Week, they gifted her the pass but not without planning a prank on Barrett’s very supportive father.

Perry decided to step outside to grab Barrett’s father in hopes he could console his daughter after what he believed to be a denial from the judges. Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie stood near Barrett, acting as if they needed to boost her up after her faux refusal. The minute her dad came to save the day, she pulled out the ticket and shocked him hard enough to get tears out of the man. Even Perry commented how heartfelt the moment and dedication was between the two, creating a tearful moment for Barrett as well.
