Keifer Thompson of Thompson Square Speaks Out About Country Music’s Future

There’s a been a lot of talk over the last several years about the state of country music and where it’s headed. While the topic of “bro-country” has been the present focus, very few have talked about the future of the genre.

Thompson Square’s Keifer Thompson spoke with TooFab.com about where he thinks the genre is headed.

“I think we will be genre-less in ten years,” he tells the website. “That is a little sad, because country music has always — it hasn’t been pop music — it’s always been that. So when everyone else was doing their thing, country music always had a smaller stake in the claim, but it was always country music and you always knew it when you heard it. You can’t really make that distinction anymore sometimes.”

One of Thompson’s most concerning thoughts was the depth of the music we hear today… something that made country music so great in the past. “I don’t think it needs to go back to George Jones and Johnny Cash, but I do think the songs need to have some more meat on ‘em. And get back to some story songs, that mean somethin’ … What is country music, it’s a relative term,” he adds.

In the meantime, Keifer is preparing for his first child, due in January, with wife and duo-partner, Shawna.
