Keith Urban used the 2019 ACM Awards as an opportunity to present a powerful new song, “Burden.”

One of the rare appearances where Urban didn’t have his guitar, he instead let his voice and lyrics do the talking on the haunting track, setting the tone for the song with a stirring piano that carried the melody.

“Let me carry your burden…get you back n a high when you’re feeling low, when the weight’s too heavy but you won’t let go…come to me my brother and I willl sit with you a while,” he sang as a single spotlight illuminated behind him. The electric guitar came in strong toward the end of the song, Urban exuding the grittiness and soulfulness of his voice as he sang the touching lyrics from his soul. Urban delivered one of the most harrowing performances of the night, one that earned him a standing ovation, including wife Nicole Kidman.

“Burden” is not a new single from Urban or featured on any of his albums. He revealed in an Instagram post hours before the ceremony that it was a song he heard and “absolutely spoke to me” and was eager to perform it on the show.
