Country star Keith Urban and his Hollywood icon wife Nicole Kidman enjoyed a glitzy date night at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, but the Australian celebrities had more on their mind than designer gowns and Ricky Gervais’ monologue.

Along with celebrating their famous friends and songwriting heroes, the power couple both kept their thoughts and prayers on the tragedy unfolding across Australia, announcing a $500,000 donation to help the country fight raging wildfires just before the show began. The entire world seems to be mobilizing in support of those volunteering in the fight, and it’s an especially personal cause for Urban.

When Urban was 10 years old his family’s home was destroyed in a fire, and he told CNN in 2010 that it gave him a new appreciation for what really matters in life, as well as the people to step up to help others in times of need.

“I mean, our whole house went down. Everything we owned went with it,” he said. “Fortunately, my mom, and my dad, and my brother and I were OK, but in that moment, organizations like the Salvation Army, Red Cross and Goodwill all came to our aid, as did the people in our community. It was amazing at that age, at 10, to see that kind of instant support, and for no other reason than just a neighbor helping a neighbor. It really affected me.”

To help Australia defeat the devastating wildfires, consider donating to the Australian Red Cross’ Disaster Relief and Recovery at fundraise.redcross.org.au; WIRES, an organization committed to helping the Australian wildlife, at wires.org.au; or by visiting any of the links Urban listed above.
