When fans first heard Keith Urban drop the title of his next album as Graffiti U, they were left scratching their heads as to the inspiration behind the project.

Going on the record to discuss what the true meaning behind the name, Urban clarified everything and showed how much of an emotional pull Graffiti U actually has on the connection he keeps with his fans. Thinking about both the recording process and his love for his supporters, the singer combined the two concepts for one eclectic title.

“The title, Graffiti U, came quite a way into recording and I was trying to find something that felt like all the songs, and I thought this was a very expressive album musically. It’s very honest, it’s very pure expression from me and the studio’s like a blank canvas. And the more I thought about that—the more I thought about the graffiti—so the word graffiti kept coming and it felt right. Then, I thought, ‘Well, there’s also the audience.’ That’s what the ‘U’ is. It’s Graffiti U, the audience, it’s inclusive. And so I just simply changed ‘you’ to the first letter of my last name, and it became Graffiti U,” Urban explained in an album trailer video.

Urban even thought about how the title reflects the various sounds that fans will hear from each of the 13 tracks featured. Songwriting credits like Ed Sheeran, Julia Michaels and more influenced a big part of the creative process and developed Graffiti U into a masterpiece representative of Urban’s growth as an artist.

Graffiti U, Urban’s latest release, is available now.
