During a fun-filled segment on a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the host and pop diva revealed that she once had to forge Underwood’s autograph for a confused fan. She told the story as part of a bit called “I’m Awesome at Being Awkward,” which was all about asking what her guests on the show would do in various awkward situations.
Sporting an eye patch after suffering an infection while filming the new season of NBC’s The Voice, she told guests Cheryl Hines and Michelle Buteau how she took on the role of her fellow American Idol champ.
“This girl came up to me and was like, ‘Oh my god, your song ‘So Small’ is one of my favorites.’ And I kept thinking, ‘I don’t have a song ‘So Small,'” Clarkson explained. “And then she said another song and I was like, ‘Oh, you think I’m Carrie Underwood.’
“I look nothing like her!” Clarkson exclaimed with a laugh. “I was so embarrassed for her. She was like, ‘Can you sign this?’ And I totally signed ‘Carrie Underwood.'”
Clarkson wrapped up her story with something to think about for all the other Underwood imposters out there, noting that what she did might have been illegal! It’s unlikely a judge would throw the book at her, but that fan might be upset if she finds out. Then again, she did end up with a truly one-of-a-kind souvenir. There’s been no word from Underwood on how she feels about the situation.
