As Kelly Clarkson’s song goes, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” and the Texas native recently proved just that. On Wednesday night (5/1), the powerhouse singer hosted the 2019 Billboard Music Awards to critical acclaim. But little did fans know that Clarkson was suffering from a bout of appendicitis.

The singer confirmed the news on Twitter, hours after having an appendectomy.

“Not gonna lie…. I may or may not have broken down in tears after the show from pain 😬 BUT thanks 2 all the amazing people @ Cedars-Sinai I flew home directly after the event, nailed the surgery early this morning, & feeling awesome now! Bye bye appendix 🤣 #TheShowMustGoOn 💁🏼‍♀️,” she wrote.

Fans were shocked by the news as Clarkson flawlessly performed two musical numbers and hosted the entire show.

The surgery won’t keep Clarkson down for long as Entertainment Tonight reports that she’s expected to appear on NBC’s The Voice for Monday’s (5/6) live show.

In addition to hosting the ceremony and coaching her team for the hit reality competition show, Clarkson is busy working on her new talk show, slated to debut on NBC in the fall. As she prepares for a busy season ahead, the singer is ready to rest and relax during the summer months with her husband and their family.

“My family and my husband’s family are all getting together and staying on this ranch and hanging out,” she told PEOPLE ahead of the BBMAs. “I don’t take a break unless I’m removed from my dwelling. I will find things to do in my house all day and night. I kind of have to remove myself, but we’re taking a little break because we haven’t had one.”

Catch Clarkson sans appendix on The Voice Monday and Tuesday nights. Her new movie Ugly Dolls is in theaters now.
