In an airplane hangar just outside of Nashville International Airport, members of the country music industry gathered to help celebrate the third No.1 single from Kelsea Ballerini.

Mirroring the “IT” girl’s music video for the chart-topping single, “Peter Pan,” the hangar was decked out with parachutes, planes and drapes galore. The occasion marked several special moments… co-writer Jesse Lee’s first No.1 song, Ballerini’s third (and history-making) No.1 single, and her debut album, The First Time, being certified gold, having sold more than 500,000 copies.

Before the festivities kicked off, the songwriters (Ballerini, Lee and Forest Glen Whitehead) sat down to discuss the spell-binding track and why they think it hit home with fans around the world.

“I think that people that haven’t experienced that kind of heartbreak yet like it because it’s a storyline that everyone knows. It’s the story of Peter Pan. It’s the classic fairy tale. It’s a Disney story,” explained Ballerini. “But the people that have experienced that, it’s a kind of heartbreak that not a lot of people talk about because it’s not someone that cheats or does some massive thing that’s wrong. It’s someone that doesn’t emotionally match another person and it’s a sad kind of thing to get over and to get through because you can’t put your finger on one thing. It’s just like it doesn’t work and that’s sad.”

The track has resonated so much with fans that they even bring their personal stories to Kelsea whenever they have a chance to talk to her.

“There have been so many times where I’ll meet a fan in a meet & greet and they’ll be like ‘I’m dating a Peter Pan’ and I know I am, and I’m like ‘get out!’ Or they’ll be like ‘your song ‘Peter Pan’ has really helped me get through this breakup because I know that he just can’t grow up, it’s not right right now,’ and I always love hearing those kind of stories. And this is the first song that I’ve heard those kind of stories,” she added.

After chatting with the media and mingling with guests, the songwriters made their way to the stage for plaque presentations and a special performance of the hit track. The performance ended with Ballerini’s fourth single from The First Time, “Yeah Boy,” a song she hopes to make more history with.
