Kelsea Ballerini was among the artists taking part in CMT Celebrates Our Heroes, a TV special honoring the frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, on Wednesday night. The special honored people from many categories, with Ballerini specifically honoring kids and young people who helped in the fight against the virus.

“I’m really excited to be a part of tonight just honoring everyone that’s been a hero during this incredibly difficult time,” Ballerini said onscreen. “Thank you so much for everything you’re doing. Specifically tonight, I want to honor all the youth and the kids that have just stepped up and been creative and been wonderful and bold and helped their neighbors, helped their friends, helped their community. You’re so wonderful, I’m so proud of you, and this is one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artists that I wanted to sing to honor you guys tonight.”

She then launched into a cover of Carole King’s “You’ve Got A Friend.” Framed by a circle, Ballerini sang the classic song while a guitarist and bassist appeared around her to provide accompaniment. While she sang, graphics popped up highlighting kids who helped their community during the pandemic. These included a teen girl who made masks for frontline workers, a 7-year-old who created a community pantry, an 11-year-old who made packages for Mother’s Day, and more.

CMT Celebrates Our Heroes featured performances and appearances from many country stars and celebrities all in honor of frontline workers during the pandemic. The special is in place of the CMT Artists Of The Year.
