Though it was 3D in the theatres when the movie bowed this summer, nothing slowed the impact of “Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D” when the 2-dimensional conversion hit the shelves for fans to take home. Though offered exclusively through Kmart on the initial run, first week sales of the film bested the #2 seller” offered everywhere — by almost 33%.

Summer in 3D – Available Exclusively at K-Mart stores and http://kmart.com/kennychesney. “It seemed like there was a lot of confusion about what markets the movie was showing in, what times, when was it opening,” Chesney says with a laugh. “This time, it was easy: log on, place your order and have it arrive at your front door. I know from what people told me during the theatrical run, people felt like we really captured the energy and the heart of our live shows, so it’s nice to know that’s something people want to take him with them, too.”

U2 was the 2nd concert DVD, followed by George Strait, Bon Jovi and Barbra Streisand.

“It’s funny,” says director Joe Thomas, who’s directed 7 chart-topping concert DVDs for the likes of Tom Petty, Dave Matthews Band, Fleetwood Mac and Bon Jovi. “People have such a hunger to see Kenny… to share in these shows and this energy… they don’t care what dimension it is. You bring them into his concert experience, and they respond.”

Shot over 7 nights in six cities” Boston, Seattle, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Indianapolis” this captured Chesney’s high energy shows from the Sand Bar, from the Goodyear Blimp, the wings and even the drum riser. Interspersed with backstage moments, behind the scenes and historical footage and Chesney’s own thoughts about music, fans, friends, dreams and the drive to connect, “Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D” was one of the most personal concert films of the 21st century.

“We’ve done concert specials,” Chesney explains. “I figured if we were gonna go into movie theatres, if this was about making a long form piece, we needed to give people something more… something a little bit deeper. And we shot the lights out of our show, but this was also about the journey to get to 65,000 people in a football stadium… the love affair between me, my guys, those fans and these songs… and I think that comes through.

“Seeing that people responded to the DVD like this, especially since you couldn’t just go to Amazon.com or somewhere and get it, it makes me feel really good” because it means what we do means something to those people we’ve been sharing our summers with for the past 8 years.”

Chesney, obviously, is the only performer to sell in excess of a million tickets each of the past 8 summers” anchoring with 12-15 NFL stadiums and sprinkling in SEC and Key West bars along the way. For the man who’s scored 19 #1s, won 8 Entertainer of the Year Awards and been the sound of summer for the 21st century, sitting out the 2010 touring season has been an adjustment, but with Hemingway’s Whiskey arriving Sept. 28, look for him to get back in the game and hit it hard.
