There have been songs about girls in country for as long as anyone can remember, and lately, they all seem to focus on the same thing: bikini tops, tan legs, tailgates, etc. But Kenny Chesney’s third single from The Big Revival, “Wild Child,” featuring Grace Potter, goes a little deeper – which was part of the reason he chose to record it.

“I’m very proud of this song because I believe there’s a lot of ways to write about women. But to me, I think their spirit – their heart and their spirit is the place to start,” Chesney, 46, says.

While the singer admits he’s a fan of some of the subject matter of so-called “bro-country,” he feels it’s a bit overdone.

“Look, I love tailgates and cutoff jeans and bikini tops as much as any guy in the world,” he says with a laugh. “But I feel like that’s been talked about a lot.”

He believes those songs have “painted women in a corner” and is happy to take a new angle with “Wild Child.”

“This song talks about their heart, and how they live their life, you know,” Chesney adds. “Just out of the box.”

“Wild Child” made quite the splash at country radio already; the track was the No.1 most-added song this week! Take a listen below.
