The wait for new music from multi-genre superstar Hunter Hayes is officially over, as he returned to the scene with his first official single in three years on Friday (1/25). The song, titled “Heartbreak,” will serve as an early preview of Hayes’ upcoming third album.

“I’ve been in some shit relationships, but I remain an optimist,” he sings on the tune.

Though heartbreaks often come with negative feelings and experiences, this song is all about finding the bright side in a breakup and how a heart breaking can better prepare someone for finding true love.

“I wanted this song to turn that feeling around for people and remind them not to let someone walk out the door with your happiness and your self-worth. I kind of want this song to be somebody’s disco ball on a depressing night rather than a box of tissues and a Hugh Grant movie,” Hayes said. “It’s a song about freedom. It’s a song about true honest happiness and love and how there is love for everyone. Not only are you worthy of being loved but there is somebody out there who loves you even though they haven’t met you. In the darkness of a heart breaking, I’m here to tell you there’s also a whole lotta light.”

Hayes’ currently untitled third album is due out sometime later in 2019, and “Heartbreak,” along with other songs he released in 2018 like “Dear God” and “One Shot,” will likely be more than enough to hold fans over until then.
