Luke Bryan Drops New Single ‘What She Wants Tonight’

After years of releasing new songs and watching them race up the charts, you’d think it might get old, but not to Luke Bryan. Backstage at the Grand Ole Opry on Tuesday night, the Georgia born superstar was grinning like a kid on Christmas morning as he spoke about his just released single “What She Wants Tonight.”
“I think this is really gonna pop on the radio. I’m really excited to hear how it translates,” he said. “The label is fired up. And out on tour, I’ve had some radio guys come up on the bus and played it for them. I’m excited for people to hear it.”
Bryan describes the song as a sexy and up tempo. “I wrote it with Ross Copperman, Hillary Lindsey and Jon Nite,” he said of the track, which was produced by Jeff and Jody Stevens. “Jon and Ross and I wrote ‘Strip it Down,’ and then we had the opportunity to bring Hillary Lindsey, and Hillary and Jon had a part in writing ‘Knockin’ Boots.’ I went so many years wanting to record a Hillary Lindsey song, especially record one I’d written with her. I’d always thought, since the day I moved to Nashville, she’s probably our most prolific writers. She’s won three CMA song of the years. I could go on and on about Hillary, but I finally got her in the room with three other knuckleheads and it’s a big up tempo.”
The starting point on the new tune came when Copperman played Bryan something he’d been working on. “Ross came in with a really, really cool track, something that really caught my ear,” Bryan said. “It catches your ear right off the bat. It talks about this girl. She kind of owns the night. She gets what she wants and I get to be what she wants tonight. I feel like it’s something girls will love, hearing that sentiment. I’m really excited about it.”
When asked if he was working on a new album, the four-time entertainer of the year replied, “I’m always working on an album and I’ve written a lot for this album. I’ve written more than I have on the past couple albums. I don’t know if that will equate to me having more songs on the album, but do I think the format of me doing a 15 or 16 song album is potentially over with? Maybe, but we do have things lined up. I do have quite a few songs recorded and when the songs peak, we’ll look at them and determine what we want to come with next. . . but we definitely have a good bit of songs recorded and are in album making mode right now.”
Bryan is excited to serve up some things for fans that they’ve not heard from him before and says the new single is a prime example. “I’m doing some different vocal things on this,” he said. “One of the first things people say is they haven’t heard me sing in that type of style. So there’s a few vocal differences in this song. The whole overall album is trending in a great place for me.”
“What She Wants Tonight” is the follow up to Bryan’s 23rd No. 1 single “Knockin’ Boots.” Look for him to perform the new single Sunday night (Oct.27) on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as part of the show’s five special post-game editions following NBC’s Sunday Night Football.
