When those feelings of “more than just friends” arise, it’s hard to fight them. Maddie & Tae are giving in to the feeling with their storylines in the music video for “Friends Don’t.”
The sexy video features the leading ladies with the men of their affection, trying to decipher whether or not their relationship will lead to more. The men seemingly blow off the women, only to turn around and surprise them with confirmation of their feelings.

“To us ‘Friends Don’t’ feels sexy and confident, but with a dash of that uncertainty you have at the start of a relationship because you don’t know if the other person feels the same way you do,” shared the duo’s Taylor Dye. “We wanted to play off that push and pull we’ve all felt before.”

“We both got to do a little acting and play out separate storylines with a love interest,” added Maddie Marlow. “It was pretty outside of the box for us to act, so we just tried to have fun with it.”

The song, co-written by Maddie & Tae with Justin Ebach and Jon Nite, was inspired by a conversation Maddie had with her younger sister over her despair to leave the ‘friend zone’ with a close friend.

“My younger sister was calling me one day and telling me about this situation with this guy she was interested in but she wasn’t sure if it was a friend thing. She was like, ‘He had taken me to a couple nice restaurants and he bought me a gift,’” Marlow recalled during a conversation with Sounds Like Nashville. “I was like, ‘Friends don’t do any of those things. That is not just a friend thing.’ They ended up dating afterward. When she called me and told me that I was like, ‘We gotta write this song!’”

The track is the lead single from Maddie & Tae’s upcoming sophomore album.
