Maren Morris got some good news at Sunday night’s (April 18) ACM Awards, taking home two trophies in another triumphant primetime moment. And then after the show, she returned the favor, giving fans some good news, too.

Speaking with reporters backstage, Morris opened up about the status of her next album, and it may be coming sooner than expected.

“I’m kind of halfway there, I think the bulk of the songs are in,” she said. “[Now] it’s just about the recording.”

That may come as a surprise, but still, the multi-Platinum hitmaker won’t put a due date on her new music. She’s intent on taking her time, and so far, it’s best described by two words: “uplifting” and “rootsy.”

“This is the first time I’ve been off the road to make a record in a very long time, so I’m really savoring that an not rushing it,” Morris said. “I would say so far, it’s a really uplifting record. I think I’m in a much lighter place in my life, even though we’re coming out of a pandemic. I think I’ve written the most, just intimate songs, and I would say the music style is just — my last record was very pop leaning, and with this next one I’m sort of coming back to this Texas, rootsy style I grew up in. I think it’s got a lot of Americana elements, a lot of rootsiness, it just feels like me but a stripped down version of me, but it’s still extremely fun and energetic, so it was kind of a little bit [of] everything. I was saying it would be a good record to drive to, to get ready to out on a Saturday night to, or even to cook too. It kind of hits all those marks.”

Whenever it’s done, and whatever it sounds like, the project will be her third major label studio album, and it’s got some big shoes to fill. Morris arrived with splash-making Number One debut Hero in 2016, and followed up with another chart-topper — 2019’s Girl.

Maren Morris walked out of the 56th annual ACM Awards with the trophies for Female Artist of the Year and Song of the Year (“The Bones”). Those mark her fourth and fifth ACM honors overall, and she also performed her steamy new single “Chasing You” with husband Ryan Hurd. See complete coverage of the show here.
