Country star couple Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd have a couple of big milestones coming up. First, the almost-guaranteed rise of their new duet, “Chasing You.” And more importantly, their son Hayes’ first birthday.

Checking in with RADIO.COM host Coop for a recent call on Rockin’ Country Saturday Night, the husband and wife duo opened up about what it’s like to live and love together at such a high level. And as the conversation naturally turned toward little Hayes (who was born in March of 2020), the proud parents beamed with happiness. Coop asked how the couple plan to celebrate Hayes turning one, and his dad’s off-the-cuff idea may be a keeper.

You’ve heard of smash cakes, where parents let their kid go wild and “smash” a cake however they want? Well, Hurd’s plan is like a more intense version of that.

“I don’t care what it is,” said Hurd, who was just learning about “smash cakes” for the first time. “But we’re doing it because that sounds fun! What if we got a cake tub and just put his whole body in the cake and he just got to swim around in it? That seems like taking the smash cake to the next level. I’m hopeful that maybe he does the smash cake so well that his face is kind of covered, because we don’t really show much of it, so we can put that picture on the Internet.”

The fun-loving couple went on to chat about collaborating for their first official duet, “Chasing You,” with Hurd proving his dedication to Morris once again. The couple also weighed in on a rapid fire round of parenting questions — like who changes more diapers, who’s the biggest pushover and more.

Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd’s “Chasing You” is out now, arriving as Morris says she’s working on her third studio album. The Texas native just delivered a stunning performance alongside John Mayer at the 63rd annual Grammy Awards.
