Today, Martina McBride released her 13th studio album, Reckless. The 10-song project is something the singer says is nothing like she originally pictured it.

“I sort of had a sound in my head, like a starting point of what I wanted the record to sound like,” McBride told Sounds Like Nashville. “I started finding songs, like ‘The Real Thing,’ ‘That’s The Thing About Love,’ ‘Low All Afternoon,’ some of the more rootsy things, but then a song like ‘Reckless’ came in and a song like ‘Just Around the Corner’ came in, and a song like ‘Pick Up Where We Left Off,’ which are a little more contemporary. It became less about a particular sound and more about just a collection of songs.”

Among the songs are two special collaborations, one with an Americana legend and the other with a country music favorite.

“We have a couple of guests on the record. We have Buddy Miller, who I’m just a huge fan of. He’s an amazing writer, producer, songwriter, singer, more in the Americana vein, so I’m a big fan. When I asked him to sing on ‘The Real Thing,’ he said yes and I’m very happy about that,” she explained. “I’m also a big fan of Keith Urban, who sang with me on a record before and he came and sang on a song called ‘Diamond.’ In both instances, it just lifted the song and the record to a whole new level.”

The record was, in a sense, a re-birth for the powerhouse vocalist.

“I think my fans are really going to enjoy this record and go ‘oh man, this sounds like the Martina that I love!’”

Reckless is out now. Up next for McBride is the 2016 American Country Countdown Awards, where she will kick-off the live broadcast with Cam and Jennifer Nettles for a collaboration on her hit, “This One’s For The Girls.”
