Mickey Guyton took her powerful song, “Black Like Me,” to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Monday night (Feb. 1) for her late-night television debut. Surrounded by candles and accompanied by a piano and guitar, Guyton shined as she sang the tune about her experience growing up as a Black woman. Guyton posted the performance on her social media platforms, sharing her excitement in the caption.

“Look. At. God! I made it on a late night show mom! My heart cannot take it,” she wrote. “Thank you guys for believing.”

Guyton announced news of her appearance on Monday on social media, showing a photo of country music fans criticizing her next to the photo of her performance announcement with the caption, “How it started vs how it’s going!”

“So excited for tonight with @colbertlateshow thank you for the opportunity,” she continued.

Although “Black Like Me” was written over a year ago, Guyton released the tune in June 2020 after the death of George Floyd.

“Our world is on fire right now,” she wrote at the time. “There is so much division and hate. I wrote this song over a year ago because I was so tired of seeing so much hate and oppression. And yet here we are in the exact same place! We must change that. I hope this song can give you a small glimpse into what my brothers and sisters have endured for 400+ years.”
