When the Jonas Brothers appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday (10/8), band member Nick Jonas surprised the audience, announcing he will be a new coach on The Voice for season 18.

The announcement came at the insistence of host DeGeneres, who could not wait any longer for Jonas to share his exciting news. The talented musician and quirky comedian took to Twitter to tease the big reveal ahead of the show.

DeGeneres showed the trio a series of video messages from current Voice coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend announcing Jonas as a new coach and welcoming him into the fold. Clarkson and Legend brought up the idea of an alliance to the former Disney star to take down Shelton in the next season.

“Just to be clear, Blake, I’m gonna kick your ass,” the Texas native joked on the talk show, also weighing his alliance options. “In addition to the competitive spirit which will be natural because I’m very competitive, I think I’m actually looking forward to really trying to help any artist who comes on the show and wants to grow.”

Staying true to the comedic nature of the show, DeGeneres had someone dressed in full-on cowboy gear jump out to scare Jonas, making him another victim to the talk show host’s famous pranks.

The Voice is currently in its 17th season and airs on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST.
