RaeLynn debuted her unique and relatable new single, “Bra Off,” in early November, and now she’s revealing the inspiration behind the song. The tune, written by RaeLynn, Emily Weisband and Josh Kerr, compares the end of a relationship to taking off a “pink and lacy, suffocating” bra, which is exactly what happened in her real life.

“I was dating this guy and like with any breakup, you think you’re going to be sad when you break up, even though some are douchebags or whatever — it doesn’t really matter,” says RaeLynn. “With that being said, when I broke up with this one guy, I literally was, it was taking my problems. It was like, ‘Oh thank God, this is fricking over.’ And when I said that to my friend, I go, ‘Breaking up with him is like taking my bra off.’ She was like, ‘Oh my God, that has to be a song.’ And then we literally wrote it in 45 minutes.”

The verses of the song explore the details of the doomed relationship, and how the singer realized the relationship wasn’t right for her. These include her cringing when he called, to her not wanting him to call her ‘babe.’ The singer says these examples also came from her real-life inspiration.

“My head space for this song was just being honest about it,” she says. “The first line, ‘I knew it was over when you called me and I cringed.’ I literally was like, ‘Ew!’”

The song puts an new twist on the subject of the break-up, and for RaeLynn, being able to tell these funny and unique stories is a special part of being a female artist in country music.

‘The impact I want to have is just that, as a woman, you honestly can say anything,” she says. “As a woman there’s so much we want to say and we can be fun with the songs that we write, and that’s the cool part about this song.”

RaeLynn says fans can be looking forward to “more honesty” in her music with a new project she’ll be releasing in the first quarter of 2020.

“It’s all about having a good time and I’m really excited for the fans to hear it,” she says.
