Rodney Atkins’ 16-year-old son Elijah was unharmed after a run-in with a drunk driver last week. In an interview with Taste of Country, the singer shared that Elijah was in an accident when a “methed-out drunk driver hit him.”

Thankfully, the damage was to Elijah’s car and not to himself.

“He’s fine,” the singer shared. “Not a scratch on him, but it totaled his truck.”

My boys❤️.

Though scary, the accident left the family with an eye-opening experience and a new lease on life. And in talking about the incident, the singer and his son found themselves revisiting the message of Atkins’ 2006 hit, “Watching You,” a song written for Elijah. In it, the track sings of a little boy mimicking everything his dad does.

“I talked to him, and I said, ‘It’s okay, you walked away from this. It’s an opportunity to look around, and something good is gonna come out of it,'” Atkins said of the conversation he had with his son. “And he said, ‘Oh, I know, Dad. I know from watching you; I’ve learned that when the worst things happen in your life to keep your head up, because that’s when some of the best things are gonna happen.'”

The teaching moment is one Atkins will continue to remember as he powers on with his musical career, recording songs that are important both to him and the people around. His latest release, “Caught Up In The Country,” is out now.
