It’s been just six months since Joey Feek passed away after a two year battle with cancer. Since then, life for her husband, Rory, has returned to a new normal, reminiscent of his life before his bride. Rory, who had raised his daughters Heidi and Hopie as a single father, would have to face that same fate for a second time.

“When the time came that we realized that Joey was most likely not going to make it through this cancer… one of the hardest things was coming to realize that I was going to be back here again where I was before, but this time raising Indiana,” Rory told PEOPLE in a recent interview.

While facing the difficult path head on, the thought of leaving her husband a single father devastated Joey. But the couple chose to look on the sunny side of things, regardless of the bleak circumstances.

“[Joey] just couldn’t bear the idea that she was going to leave me a single parent again because I’d already been through it. She told me right on the porch out there,” explained Rory. “She said, ‘It’s not fair. You’re not supposed to have to do this again.’ I said, ‘But on the other hand, I’m perfect. I already know how.'”

The couple will continue to inspire the world with their warmth and positivity when the film, To Joey, With Love, hits select cities on Sept. 20 and Oct. 6. The tribute film was created by Rory and will cover their life together throughout the final two-and-a-half years of Joey’s time on earth.
