The Chicks appeared on the final night of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, August 20 to sing an a cappella version of the “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The trio, made up of Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire, appeared virtually on a screen in three separate panels. Maines appeared in the middle portion of the screen singing the lead melody, while Strayer and Maguire appeared on the edges singing harmony with their hands over their hearts. They kept their harmony strong until the last triumphant note of the national anthem.

The band posted a video of their performance on Instagram, writing, “Use your VOICE. Use your VOTE. #DemConvention2020 #Vote #starspangledbanner #nationalanthem.”

The Chicks were among various artists who performed during the three-day event, which cemented Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris’s run for the White House. Other artists who performed include Maggie Rogers, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend and more.

The performance comes after the release of their new album, Gaslighter, on July 17, and the announcement of their decision to drop the word “Dixie” from their band name. The group dropped the word in light of the racial justice protests happening around the country this summer. The Chicks told the New York Times that they “were literally teenagers” when they chose “that stupid name,” and that they had wanted to change it for awhile.

“We wanted to change it years and years and years ago,” said Maines. “I just wanted to separate myself from people that wave that Dixie flag.”
