The Voice Recap: Meet Your Season 16 Final Four

It’s crunch time! During the semi-final results show, the Top 8 contestants on NBC’s The Voice were cut down to four finalists for next week’s finale of season 16.

Of course, no episode of the hit reality show would be complete without at least some music, so coaches Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton signed up to sing for the audience. Season nine finalist Emily Ann Roberts also returned for a performance of her new single, “Someday Dream,” and, thanks to Mastercard, Kris Branch, whom Blake surprised in the studio a few weeks ago, got a chance to perform for The Voice audience.

Blake was first up with his new single, “God’s Country,” earning a standing ovation from fellow coaches Kelly, John Legend, and Adam Levine.

Before the first artist continuing on was announced, host Carson Daly revealed that Team Legend’s Maelyn Jarmon was the most streamed Voice artist on Apple Music from the performances of the night before.

All dressed in black, the artists huddled up in their teams, the first contestant moving on is, indeed, Maelyn.

Maelyn does have an incredibly silky and effortless voice, and what makes the 26-year-old from Frisco, Texas even more remarkable is that she is deaf in her right ear and has just 80% hearing in her left ear.

The next artist to advance is Team Blake’s, Dexter Roberts.

The 27-year-old from Fayette, Alabama, had just started building a name for himself nationally as a touring musician when he contracted Rocky Mountain spotted fever. After he recovered, he scored a record deal in Nashville, but the label has since shuttered.

Before any more results were announced, Kelly was joined by her sole remaining team member, Rod Stokes, for a performance of the Bob Seger and Martina McBride duet, “Chances Are.”

The third artist to move on to the finale is Team Blake’s Gyth Rigdon.

Growing up on a racehorse farm in Singer, Louisiana, the 25-year-old’s first professional gig was a three-hour set at a biker bar at the age of 17. He has since gone on to share the stage with country stars like Jake Owen and Gary Allen.

From the five remaining artists, three were selected for an Instant Save opportunity. Those three were Team Legend’s Shawn Sounds, Team Kelly’s Rod Stokes, and Team Blake’s Andrew Sevener.

And as Blake went to hug his two eliminated singers, Carter Lloyd Horne and Kim Cherry, he could be heard inviting them to come and play at one of his venues.

Andrew was up first singing Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man.” Rod followed with “Brother” recorded by both Need2breathe and Gavin DeGraw, then Shawn wrapped up the Instant Save performances with his version of “That’s What I Like” by Bruno Mars.

And the final artist to round out the Top 4 finalists is Andrew Sevener.

From Alvarado, Texas, Andrew came up in a musical family. In addition to his solo career, the 22-year-old also plays in a band with his parents continuing the musical legacy.

The Top 4 will perform on May 20 with the winner announced on May 21. In addition, the Jonas Brothers, and Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie will be a part of the final show.
