This was the last week of competition on season 17 of NBC’s The Voice before the semi-finals kick off on December 9, so a lot was on the line for the Top 10 contestants remaining on the show and their coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani.

With a theme of “Challenge Week,” most of the performers selected songs that represented them and their own personal or professional challenges, and the emotionally charged performances saw each act leave everything on the stage.

ROSE SHORT (34) – “God’s Country” by Blake Shelton

  • From Team Gwen

BLAKE: “I was thinking that when she sings it, it actually doesn’t seem that hard because you were killing it, my God. That makes me rethink my entire arrangement…Was that the same song? That was incredible.”

KELLY: “I thought it was incredible. One, it’s a testament to both of your talents…it’s a huge range of a song and I just thought it was incredible what you did with it.”

GWEN: “It just feels so meant to be and beautiful and perfect for this moment…I’m just so proud of you.”

MARYBETH BYRD (18) – “Lose You to Love Me” by Selena Gomez

  • From Team Legend

KELLY: “This is going to sound like an odd compliment, but you have a way with consonants that really make people hang…it makes people hang on every word and it’s a beautiful thing.”

GWEN: “I was floored by that, absolutely floored…it was so good.”

JOHN: “I was so happy watching that because we talked about building the story and it takes a lot of subtlety and a lot of artistry to do it the way you did it. You didn’t over sing. You picked your spots. You got big when you needed to. It was such a great build in the story. I thought it was your most artistic performance you’ve given on the show so far.”

KAT HAMMOCK (18) – “You’re Still the One” by Shania Twain

  • From Team Blake

GWEN: “That was magical, you are magical…Nobody is like you. You are the most original person on this show right now for sure.”

JOHN: “I love how every time you do a song, you make it your own.”

BLAKE: “I’m running out of compliments for you at this point. That has got to be now my new favorite performance from you…It’s like if the angel that people put on top of their Christmas tree could bust out into a song, that’s what it would sound like right there.”

The contestants got a quick break from performing to let a veteran, by comparison, take the stage. Country music’s Kane Brown took center stage to sing his tender and heartfelt new single, “Homesick.”

SHANE Q (28) – “Caribbean Queen (No More Love On the Run)” by Billy Ocean

  • From Team Kelly

JOHN: “I really see you growing every week as a performer.”

KELLY: “You’re really coming out of your shell…I love you on stage.”

JAKE HOOT (30) – “That Ain’t My Truck” by Rhett Akins

  • From Team Kelly

GWEN: “That was, honestly, your best performance you’ve ever done on the show.”

BLAKE: “As hard as it is for me to say, Kelly is doing an incredible job with you.”

KELLY: “Hell has frozen over. Honestly, I don’t do anything…I’m mean, your family has got to be so proud. It’s like we’re watching your show, you know that. Don’t get a big head.”

JOANA MARTINEZ (16) – “Impossible” by Christina Aguilera

  • From Team Gwen

JOHN: “You are just owning this moment…I just feel like your confidence and poise and maturity are beyond your years.”

GWEN: “I have to keep reminding myself that you just turned 16 last week…You seem so confident, you manhandled the stage. I was very, very impressed with you tonight.”

KATIE KADAN (38) – “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele

  • From Team Legend

BLAKE: “I started creating conspiracy theories in my head. I was like, ‘This can’t really be happening on this show right now. She can’t be that good. This is a set-up deal. There’s no way somebody can be this good and hasn’t already made it in the music industry.’”

KELLY: “You light a fire, you make everybody happy…and I love your growl.”

JOHN: “We were rehearsing Wednesday morning and my family didn’t know we were going to be recording at my house and they flew in from Ohio that morning and they arrived at the house and when they arrived, the only person they wanted to meet was Katie.”

HELLO SUNDAY (Myla – 13, Chelsea – 14) – “Stone Cold” by Demi Lovato

  • From Team Kelly

KELLY: “That was so beautiful. And  a lot of people don’t know the depth of the conversation that was had that day (breaks into tears)…well done.”

RICKY DURAN (29) – “Born Under a Bad Sign” by Albert King

  • From Team Blake

JOHN: “It’s no secret, you are incredible. Every week you show us why you belong here.”

BLAKE: “I want everybody at home to take the remote right now, rewind that performance and try to find anything that is not magical about it…America, if this guy doesn’t belong in the finale, I will kiss your collective butts.”

WILL BREMAN (25) – “My Body” by Young the Giant

From Team Legend

KELLY: “My thoughts are, you just let me know where you’re playing after you’re done with this show and I’ll show up. That was incredible. It was like this was your show and everybody opened up for you.”

GWEN: “The music lives inside you and you’re so unique and so original and you have to get it out.”

JOHN: “This was my favorite performance that you’ve done, it was so electric…it was masterful.”

With that, the singers await the decision on their destiny as the Top 10 goes to the Top 8 and the semi-final round during the December 3 live elimination round.
